Why Order Compression Garments From Bandages Plus

When the Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA) took effect in January 2024, people were thrilled that, for the first time, lymphedema compression garments and bandaging supplies would be covered by Medicare.

While there is no doubt that the Medicare Coverage is beneficial for some, in other circumstances, people are finding that the Lymphedema Treatment Act’s coverage leaves a lot to be desired.

For starters, to qualify for Medicare Coverage, you need to order your compression garments or bandaging supplies from an enrolled DMEPOS (durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies) supplier. That means, your initial challenge is finding an enrolled Medicare supplier to order your lymphedema products from.

Because of Medicare’s low reimbursement rates, many of the enrolled DMEPOS suppliers are only able to provide “basic” compression garments and bandaging supplies. That means you may not be able to purchase the exact compression garment or bandaging supply that you would like, and instead may be offered a lower-quality alternative.

There are also a significant number of hoops that you will need to jump through to place your order. Specifically, the DMEPOS supplier will need certain required documentation from you and your healthcare provider to process your order, and any delays in getting that information will undoubtedly result in delays for you in receiving your supplies.

To help make your purchasing decision easier, we are providing several reasons that might make it more advantageous to order your lymphedema products directly from from Bandages Plus, instead of through a Medicare enrolled DMEPOS supplier.

    Deductible And Co-Pay For Medicare

Medicare coverage will not kick in for compression garments for lymphedema until you have reached your deductible for the year, and you will be responsible for a 20% co-pay for all covered items purchased. Depending on your situation, it may be cheaper for you, or make more economical sense to self-pay for your lymphedema products.

Medicare Coverage for Lymphedema Products Requires A Prescription

You can order compression garments from Bandages Plus without a prescription. To qualify for Medicare coverage of compression garments and lymphedema bandaging supplies, you will need to have been seen by an authorized medical practitioner within the past 6 months, have been diagnosed as having lymphedema and received a signed prescription for the supplies that you want to purchase.

    Eligibility For Medicare Coverage

To qualify for Medicare coverage, your medical practitioner will also need to provide the DMEPOS supplier with your medical records which must be sufficiently documented to include your medical condition and plan of care for treating your lymphedema. The information provided must include details such as: diagnosis codes, stage/phase of lymphedema, duration of lymphedema treatment, the need for a compression garment, measurements for the compression garment, and more. Delays in getting the required information will result in delays for you in receiving your supplies.

    Process Of Ordering Compression Garments

The process of ordering from a DMEPOS supplier can be cumbersome, complicated, and time-consuming. To order from an enrolled DMEPOS supplier, you will need to provide a signed prescription, as well as certain, specific documentation from your healthcare provider. The DMEPOS supplier will also require you to sign a HIPPA medical record release form, and likely a financial responsibility form.

We make it easy to order compression garments and bandaging supplies – just call us at (800) 770-1032, or place an order online! By ordering directly with us, you eliminate all of the hassle!

    Timeframe For Receiving Your Order

Ordering from a DMEPOS supplier is a multi-step process, and until every step is completed and verified, your compression garments and lymphedema products will not be shipped. Delays in receiving the necessary documentation will lengthen the timeframe in which you can expect to receive your products.

When you order from us, you have the option to select the delivery timeframe based on your individual needs. No frustration caused by unexpected, long delays in getting your order!

    Quality Of Compression Garments

Medicare limits the reimbursement rate for compression garments for lymphedema, which means that DMEPOS suppliers often only provide the most “basic” version of garments. In short, you are likely to experience a limited offering of compression garments and bandaging supplies if you choose to purchase with Medicare coverage.

If you would prefer a higher quality compression garment (for medical reasons, greater/desired features, added comfort or simply personal preference), we can provide exactly what you need!

    Limits On Compression Garments

Medicare only covers 3 daytime compression garments and 2 nighttime compression garments, every six months. If you have exceeded this limit, you will not be eligible for Medicare coverage on additional products.

    Competitive Pricing And Discounts

We offer some of the most competitive pricing in the industry. We are also pleased to offer discounts:

    • 10% discount for first-time customers (discount code: BPWELCOME)
    • 5% ongoing discount for all customers who place their orders online (discount code: BP5)

When you consider the Medicare 20% co-pay, compared to the Bandages Plus discounted pricing, doesn't it make sense to get the exact products you want, without the hassle and long wait times?

Private Insurance Coverage For Compression Garments: Please note that while the information above is specific to Medicare, a lot of it also pertains to private insurance coverage. While some private insurance companies cover compression garments, the reimbursement rates for DMEPOS suppliers can be even lower than the rate that Medicare pays. This means that many DMEPOS suppliers might have to furnish a very basic compression garment product, or they might not be able to offer a compression garment or supplies at all.
